SB 239 Medical Aid in Dying Bill
Dear Friends,
As you may have heard, SB 239, a Medical Aid in Dying Bill has made it to Gov. Lombardo’s desk. I know that our faith traditions have different attitudes towards this issue, but we are all deeply committed to the care of those in our communities. I believe that in addition to compassion, there is an issue of religious liberty at stake. The opposition to this bill has been most vocally from Catholic and LDS communities. No one (or a few) religious viewpoints should control the actions of others. While they may not ever choose medical aid in dying for themselves, others may choose to. If the Governor signs this bill into law, it would not force anyone to choose this option, but leave it as just that, an option. Following a particular religious view in order to defeat the bill, would mean others are unable to make that choice, as a result of other people’s beliefs.
I have enclosed a draft of the letter I will be submitting. If you are comfortable having your name added, please let me know by the end of the day. I apologize for the short amount of time. I would also be more than willing to discuss this issue, for the sake of understanding and growth, whether or not the bill becomes law. Thank you for your consideration.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Zober
